The Taboo Subject

Sex.

The taboo subject of the church and pastors.

The word taboo means "a social or religious custom prohibiting or forbidding discussion of a particular practice or forbidding association with a particular person, place, or thing."

For centuries, pastoral leadership avoid this subject.

For a bad reason.

According to Blazinggrace.org, 70% of Christians struggle with pornography.
I believe that this is a conservative number because now with the Internet and personal electronic devices, accessiblityaffordability, and anonymity takes this number to possibly 80 or 85%

Out of 81 pastors, 98% were exposed to porn, 43% intentionally watched porn. According to one site, 50% of pastors in the United States struggle with porn. There are over 330,000 protestant churches in the United States. This means that over 165,000 pastors struggle with porn.

Therefore, there is a 50% chance that the people of God may have a pastor that is watching porn, masturbating or acting out their sexuality illegally, and preaching to them.

The statisical results reveal a catastrophic malfunction which renders the Christian church ineffective to be salt and light in the earth.

There are other places where there is salt and light, but make no mistake about it. Ephesians 5:26-27 is in operation.

If you are a pastor and you are struggling with porn and masturbation yourself, it's like two people in a burning building. One victim turns to the other victim and says that they can rescue the other victim. If two people are burning in a building, it's common sense for someone outside the building to rescue them.

Just recently, a pastor in Montgomery, AL was removed from his church because it is alleged that he infected a few women with HIV/AIDS. A deacon in the same church was removed when he committed adultery with a church member. Another married pastor with 4 children was arrested and convicted of infecting a church member.

This taboo subject is now a pandemic.

The pastors cannot stop this onslaught and that's because the Lord cannot stop man if he deliberately violates the Word fo God to watch porn. However, the world cannot stop a pastor from addressing this hot button topic. But why do pastors avoid this subject? Millions of wives are struggling to understand their husband's porn addiction habits. They seek the one place where, at least, a pastor should have a working knowledge of this area.

Why is it that most pastors do not have enough knowledge in this area?

There are three reasons.

1. Pastors are involved in porn and masturbation themselves.

2. Pastors refer counseling along these lines to "professionals specilaizing in this area."

3. Pastors are ill-equipped to gain knowledge in the area because it would convict them of their own involvement.

Since 2008, I set out to get as much information about this area. I had to figure out why I did what I did (porn and masturbation). By the way, no one watches porn and not act out sexually in masturbation, adultery, fornication, homosexuality, or bisexuality. According to the late Ted Bundy, executed in January of 1989 for the sexual assult and murder of a 12 year old, said these words in an interview with Dr. James Dobson. "Porn is not the cause but it is the fuel."

Therefore, pornography is just an accelerant added to the fire of lust in the heart, mind, and flesh of men and women.

There are millions of couples that want answers to the questions about porn and pastors today need to have answers.

It doesn't take refering couples to seek professional help. You just need to have a working knowledge of this area.

Again, it is hard to throw a life preserver or floatation device if you are in the water yourself.

I'll never forget it. A couple walked in to the pastor's study, and she was looking for help with her husband's pornography. I couldn't help her because of the three reasons listed above. However, after I received God's grace to break free, I was able to help.

Pastor, all around us, couples are looking for answers from the Scriptures we preach from. If we can't live what we preach, we are disqualified. However, there are other pastors that are living free of porn and masturbation, but they are ill equipped to handle this area. Take the time to reasearch this area. Just like you study to present your sermons, do the same. If you are married, have your wife join you so you can understand, from a woman's perspective what they go through when a wife discovers her husband's porn addiction.

You will also be better equipped to handle marriage counseling because it's certain that somewhere down the road, this subject will come to light.

As long as this earth is here and the Lord tarries, this subject will remain before us. And we need to be ready to handle this subject.
